Man United are now looking at ‘complete’ player who Newcastle thought they were signing last month

Manchester United’s quest to sign a new striker could coincide with Newcastle United’s forward search.

The Magpies could be in the market for a goalscorer this summer, with Callum Wilson‘s future very much up in the air. If he does leave St James’ Park, and it is considered likely that Wilson will leave, Newcastle United will need to sign another striker.

They will need someone else to provide backup for Alexander Isak – ideally someone who is going to be fit every week. That is the issue with Wilson, whose goalscoring ability cannot be questioned. But his fitness record can, and it has been a constant issue during his Newcastle United career.

Newcastle had identified Callum Wilson replacement

That had led to suggestions earlier this summer that Newcastle could replace Wilson with Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The Magpies are long-term admirers of the 27-year-old, and tried very hard to sign him in 2022. However, Newcastle decided that Calvert-Lewin was too expensive two years ago.

Fast forward to 2024 and that has remained the issue. Newcastle were confident about signing Calvert-Lewin in June, amid talks that Yankuba Minteh could go the other way.

However, a deal collapsed due to the Toffees’ financial demands. It was reported that Everton wanted £37million for Calvert-Lewin, which was way too much for Toon officials to pay.

Newcastle walked away, and now Calvert-Lewin is attracting interest from elsewhere.

Manchester United now consider Dominic Calvert-Lewin move

That is according to the Athletic, who report that Manchester Untied have discussed signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin from Everton.

While the Red Devils are planning to sign Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna, Erik ten Hag is considering signing another attacker to provide support for Rasmus Hojlund.

And Calvert-Lewin is on their list of targets, as well as former Newcastle United player Ivan Toney.

However, the Athletic add that Calvert-Lewin will be much cheaper, with a £30million deal with Everton seen as ‘plausible’.

They add that he is looking to leave Goodison Park, and will be not be signing a new contract. That is also what Geordie Boot Boys have been told, with Calvert-Lewin not planning to extend his current Everton deal.

Newcastle could go back in for Calvert-Lewin

His current contract expires in 2025, which means he could leave for free next year.

That will increase Everton’s desire to sell this summer, rather than risk losing him for nothing. They need to get a fee for him – especially given their financial situation.

That is why Man United are pondering a move, and it is also why Newcastle returning to the table for the ‘complete‘ striker should not be ruled out.

After a deal collapsed in June, it was reported that Newcastle could reignite their interest in Calvert-Lewin later in the summer. That would come as no surprise, as he is clearly a player who Eddie Howe really likes.

For Newcastle, it will all hinge on Wilson. If he goes then a replacement will need to arrive. And if the Magpies find themselves in that position then you have to imagine that they will test the water with Calvert-Lewin once again – assuming Manchester United have not completed a deal of their own, of course.
