Newcastle United have shifted their attention to the summer after a lacklustre winter transfer window.

There are not expected to be any additions at Newcastle United before the transfer window closes on Monday night. The only major deals involving the club will be Miguel Almiron’s move to Atlanta United and Lloyd Kelly leaving Newcastle for Juventus.

From an incoming perspective, it has been non-existent for the Magpies as PSR continues to be a problem at the club.

There is hope that the summer transfer window will be much more satisfying for fans due to Kelly and Almiron’s sales coupled with Newcastle’s £73m PSR boost which should give them much more freedom to spend.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe wanted to improve three positions in the window, but will now have to make do with a reduced squad until the end of the season.

With the transfer window winding up, Newcastle will now have to make a summer move for a player that sporting director Paul Mitchell is a big fan of.

Newcastle could sign Rayan Cherki in the summer

Lyon attacker Rayan Cherki has been embroiled in transfer rumours throughout the transfer window. John Textor, a club stakeholder has now personally put any talk of a deadline day move to bed.

Newcastle were interested in Cherki who would only cost around £20m, pundits consider the fee a ‘bargain’ for someone of Cherki’s quality.

Textor spoke to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano over a potential move for his player after he was touted for a move to Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund.

“We rejected Borussia Dortmund’s offer and we do not intend to negotiate with them or any other club”, he said.

Lyon are in serious need of money after they were handed a provisional relegation to Ligue 2 for severe financial losses. Cherki has impressed in his appearances for the French club this season with 14 goal involvements across 27 appearances in all competitions.

Howe has his reservations about Cherki, he believes that Newcastle do not need him, but Mitchell is keen on bringing him to Tyneside.

Newcastle could land another Lyon star

Newcastle’s reluctance to make signings means they are now forced to wait until the summer before welcoming new players to the club.

Cherki is not the only Lyon star on the Magpies’ list of transfer targets, however, 21-year-old Ernest Nuamah is on Newcastle’s radar after performing well in his 15 Ligue 1 games this season.

The Ghanian has only scored once in the league so far this campaign but has done more than enough to impress Mitchell.

Newcastle still see Nuamah as a work in progress, so the extra few months at Lyon could be perfect for him before making a move to Tyneside.

Nuamah has featured in seven of Lyon’s Europa League games this season, scoring once and bagging a single assist.
