Liverpool’s sporting director shares transfer stance amid links with Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon

Anthony Gordon has been in the news of late during some concerning times for Newcastle United.

The forward is understood to have had his head turned after Newcastle held talks with Liverpool about a potential sale when desperately trying to raise money to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Gordon, however, has constantly spoken about his love for working under Eddie Howe, so there will surely be hope of putting that particular saga to bed.

Indeed, there has even been talk about a new contract at St James’ Park, which should hopefully do the job.

Still, it’s not a link that is likely to go away until either the club or Gordon himself come out and make a statement.

With that in mind, it’s worth looking at what Liverpool have said about their plans for the summer.

Richard Hughes was appointed sporting director at Anfield as the Reds looked to change things up following the exit of Jurgen Klopp.

Hughes, who was also linked with a move to Newcastle before joining Liverpool, was speaking to the media on Friday alongside new Reds coach Arne Slot.

Asked about their plans for this summer, Hughes admitted the club would be “opportunistic” in the transfer market.

“With the window open we will always be opportunistic if we can, if we can improve certain areas as we go we will look to do that,” he said (via Liverpool’s official website).

Newcastle are still really confident about keeping Anthony Gordon

Luckily, there is thought to be a confidence at Newcastle about keeping Gordon.

Now the PSR deadline has passed, it would surely take a gargantuan offer to tempt the club into selling a 23-year-old player with the world at his feet.

Being open to a move to Liverpool is understandable from Gordon’s perspective but hopefully a new contract and the ambition on show at Newcastle is enough for him to move on from this saga.

Newcastle will no doubt be all the better for it.
