Newcastle United officials are concerned that Anthony Gordon may have had his head turned after interest from Liverpool recently.

Despite the summer transfer window being open for under three weeks, Newcastle are enduring a turbulent time with key players offered to rival clubs to help comply with PSR.

The club managed to successfully navigate the muddy waters of the Premier League’s much-criticised financial regulations, with the departures of Yankuba Minteh to Brighton and Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest.

A troublesome summer has worsened with Newcastle fearing Gordon has had his head turned by Liverpool after a potential move for the winger failed to materialise.

Gordon forced a move to Newcastle from Everton in January 2023, when he refused to turn up for training after being impacted by negative fan reaction at Goodison Park.

While there are no such suggestions that the England international could do something similar here to achieve a move to Liverpool, he did support the Reds as a child.

But Newcastle are determined to keep hold of Gordon, who is seen as a vital part of Eddie Howe’s side, and the club aim to learn lessons from Everton’s handling of his departure last year.

Newcastle now intend to show Gordon some love when he returns from international duty with England at Euro 2024, according to the Telegraph.

Whether the club offer the influential winger an improved contract remains to be seen, though the club will explore all avenues to ensure Gordon remains on Tyneside.

Gordon admitted he wasn’t at the right levels when he joined Newcastle, and that it took time to adjust to Howe’s intense training schedules. He initially struggled to cement a place in the Newcastle side with Joelinton and Joe Willock establishing a good relationship on the left.

The former Everton winger worked tirelessly to improve his fitness last summer before having a successful European Championship with England’s under-21s, resulting in Gordon being named Player of the Tournament.

Gordon took his improved form into Newcastle’s 2023/24 campaign, where he scored 12 goals and assisted a further 11 in 48 appearances for the club. It was Gordon’s most productive season of his career to date and a testament to him adapting to Howe’s demands.
