Kalvin Phillips has now decided who he would rather sign for after news recently emerged that Tottenham are rivalling Newcastle United for his signature.

Newcastle have been keeping a close eye on Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips for some time now and a new problem arose today when Tottenham’s interest was revealed.

However, a report from TeamTALK suggests that the Magpies are still the favourites to sign the midfielder as he would prefer to stay in the North of England.

Phillips prefers a move to Newcastle

Newcastle and Juventus were believed to be the two frontrunners for Phillips heading into January and when the Italian giants pulled out of the race it looked like the midfielder was destined for the North East.

However, the two teams are yet to come to an agreement on the loan fee as Man City are believed to want around £6m to temporarily take on the England international.

This left the window open for Phillips who is now also wanted by Tottenham, but a move down to the capital doesn’t seem to appeal to the 28-year-old who very recently became a father.

The report states that Phillips is very family-oriented and therefore would prefer not to have to relocate so far away and instead would rather see the move to Newcastle go through in the final two weeks of the January window.

Newcastle must find the money to make their first signing

At this point most Newcastle fans would probably take Phillips as the only addition to the squad this month despite the need for more an the optimism amongst the fans heading into January.

Eddie Howe has really struggled with managing the stretched squad who have been so unfortunate to pick up an unbelievable amount of injuries and would like to avoid a similar situation in the second half of the season.

The budget, however, just isn’t there to bring in top players and now the feeling on Tyneside is that they would be lucky to sign Phillips alone as it is at least one pair of fresh legs.

Newcastle are also crying out for a defensive midfielder as we’ve seen time and time again this season, so it does feel like externally this is the ideal move for all parties.
