Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that Juventus are in talks with one of Newcastle United’s January targets which would be a huge blow for the Magpies.

Newcastle have been keen on signing Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips since the summer and are still looking to attain him in January, but it’s proving to be more difficult than first thought.

Romano is now reporting that Juventus are in talks with City over a potential loan move with an option to buy, but Newcastle are still very interested.

Juventus look to steal Phillips from Newcastle’s grasp

Both Newcastle and Juventus has been targeting Phillips for a while now with the Magpies making the midfielder their number one priority for the January window.

With no Sandro Tonali for the rest of the season, Newcastle are desperate to bring in reinforcements that will help them push on for the second half of the season now that they are out of the Champions League.

But while it was believed that Newcastle were the frontrunners for Phillips given their position in the league and what their long-term goals are, Juventus have thrown a spanner in the works.

Romano understands that the two clubs are negotiating a loan deal for the England international with an option to make it permanent, and Phillips is said to be open to a move to European club.

Phillips wants to save his England career

One thing that is definitely on the mind of the 28-year-old is whether or not his seat on the plan to Euro 2024 will be up for grabs if he’s not playing regular football every week.

At Man City he is never going to get into the team unless there are major injuries or they are playing a rotated team in a nothing game like we saw in the Champions League in the middle of the week.

While Juventus may be offering him guaranteed playing time, Newcastle is also the perfect opportunity to showcase his skills given the current injury crisis, and his hard-working attitude would be adored in the North East.
