Journalist Luke Edwards has shared what Newcastle United are planning to do after learning that Joelinton could be ruled out for the season.
Newcastle have been dealt another huge blow in what was already an injury-plagued campaign as Joelinton now faces five to six months out recovering from a possible surgery on his thigh.
While Newcastle weren’t planning on spending much in this January window, Edwards has now claimed on the BBC’s Transfer Gossip Daily that there will be emergency meetings held this week about what they will do this month.
Newcastle could move funds forwards after Joelinton injury
We saw it happen last season when Newcastle fast-tracked a move that was meant to go through in the summer with a £45m bid for Anthony Gordon, a deal which turned out to be very smart business.
Now, with Newcastle losing Joelinton and facing having just three central midfielders available for the immediate future, they may have to do something similar if they want to compete for Europe.
Joe Willock remains out for the time being, though could make his return in February, and Bruno Guimaraes is one yellow card away from a two-game suspension, so it’s going to be tough for Eddie Howe to manage the next month or so.
What Newcastle won’t want to happen is to be stuck with Sean Longstaff and Lewis Miley as the only available midfielders, but that is a real possibility if they don’t sign someone in this window.
On the show, Edwards said: “I think there’s going to be some emergency transfer meetings at Newcastle. I’m led to believe that there are going to be those talks this week.
“They’ve been reluctant to do anything due to PSR. I initially thought the Kalvin Phillips information (that we were walking away) was an act of brinkmanship, that they were looking to get the information out there so Man City returned to the table and lowered their demands.
“I just think Newcastle have to do something. If they don’t do something, this season is in danger. They aren’t going to get into Europe. They’ve got to give Eddie Howe some help. I think this Joelinton news will change things.
“They didn’t want to do anything this month, but I think their hand will be forced by this Joelinton injury news.”

Joelinton will be a huge miss this season
It goes without saying at this point, but losing Joelinton for the remainder of the season would be an absolutely massive blow for Newcastle’s European hopes in the second half of the season.
They have slipped down to 10th in the Premier League but there was optimism that the can turn it around after the Aston Villa game when the fixture list starts to look a little kinder.
Against Manchester City it was obvious that Newcastle were missing Joelinton in the midfield, no other player has his strength and physicality and it really showed as Guardiola’s side struck late to win the game.
Joelinton and Bruno have been the heart beat of this Newcastle team with their Brazilian flair driving the side forwards and it’s going to be a serious uphill battle to now get into a European spot.
