Alan Shearer has suggested that there was a major mistake made by the referee in Newcastle United’s defeat to Man City yesterday.
Newcastle fell to a late defeat having led earlier on in the game, but it was Man City’s opening goal which the crowd and Shearer were so frustrated with.
While watching the game for the Premier League, Shearer was furious that the opening goal from Bernardo Silva was allowed to stand after a rough challenge on Anthony Gordon in the build up.
Shearer says it should have been a free-kick for Newcastle
Gordon was just about to turn on the burners having kicked the ball a fair few yards ahead of him so he could run onto it and get in behind Man City’s defence, but Ruben Dias had other ideas.
The Portuguese made a challenge on the winger right in front of Eddie Howe on the touchline and wiped out Gordon, but the referee deemed it to be a fair tackle on the ball and played on.
Man City would then go back up the pitch and score the opening goal, leaving the Newcastle crowd furious that it was even allowed to get to that point.
Howe has already made his feelings about the incident known, but he’s also aware that his team had the chance to win the game from the point despite the decision going against them.
When watching the goal, Shearer said: “That should be a foul. The crowd’s going to go mad.”

Newcastle make it four defeats in a row
Although it was a tight game and Newcastle had gone toe-to-toe with the best team in the world currently, the Magpies again took zero points away from a Premier League match for the fourth game in a row.
Of course, context matters – the games against Luton and Nottingham Forest were disastrous and a huge cause for concern, but yesterday’s defeat showed desire and quality they were just outshone by unbelievable talents.
However, they still took nothing from the game and Newcastle are at serious danger of becoming a bottom half team if they don’t start to pick things up in the second half of the season.
With very little money to spend in January, it looks like Howe will have to rely on players coming back from injury as well as the two week break to give his players some rest before getting back to the intense high-pressing football which was so successful last year.
