Harry Maguire has fallen down the pecking order at Manchester United and now Jose Enrique has urged the England defender to move on amid interest from Newcastle United.
While a regular in Gareth Southgate’s England team, Maguire is finding game time at Manchester United much harder to come by under Erik ten Hag.

The £80million signing from Leicester City remains England’s most expensive defender, but has made just 20 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils this season. Now Jose Enrique has shared his view on Twitter saying: “He is a good player but is true that if he is clever he should leave united and be starting somewhere else in the summer”
Seemingly a response to Maguire saying he shouldn’t have to prove himself as the media and fans pile the pressure on him.
Newcastle have been linked with Maguire recently, and while it sounds like a bad move on paper given his form for Manchester United lately, it could still be worth a punt if the money works.
It’s my feeling that if Maguire was to leave Man United, the weight of the pressure currently on him would lift and it could spark him back into life. We saw in the World Cup that he can still do a good job at centre back.
Newcastle is an unlikely destination for Maguire
There are a couple of issues with the idea of a move, namely that he’s currently on around £200,000 a week, which is beyond Newcastle’s salary cap. Also the fact that he’s 30 which goes against Newcastle’s recruitment ideals of signing young players for the future.
On the flip side, though, he has bags of experience. Not every player can say they’ve captained England and Manchester United. He could be a great partner and mentor for Sven Botman.
Callum Wilson and Danny Murphy have previously suggested that Maguire could thrive at Newcastle, but it’s the fans who’d need to be sold on the idea.
It’s an unlikely one to happen, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s linked with a move to Newcastle until he signs for a new club.
