Danny Murphy makes big claim involving Harry Maguire and Newcastle

Harry Maguire‘s Manchester United career is at a crossroads, and pundit Danny Murphy believes he could be a good signing for Newcastle United.

The Red Devils skipper has lost his place in the starting XI at Old Trafford this season, and recently saw left-back Luke Shaw favoured over him at the heart of defence.

It has been a rough few years for Maguire, who has seen his stock drop massively since his £80million move to Manchester United.

His only saving grace has been his international exploits, with the 29-year-old continuing to thrive for England. Maguire impressed at the World Cup, with Jamie Carragher describing his performance against USA as ‘brilliant‘.

But it is clear that Maguire needs a fresh start. He needs a transfer, and he needs it soon. And TalkSPORT pundit Danny Murphy thinks a move to St James’ Park could be a possibility.

Danny Murphy thinks Harry Maguire to Newcastle is possible

The former Liverpool midfielder has been speaking about Maguire’s future on TalkSPORT, and has pitched a potential transfer to St James’ Park.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if someone like Eddie Howe went for Maguire as another choice for them,” he said.

“A club like Newcastle could do a lot worse than get someone like Maguire.

“His Manchester United career is done. I think it’s done. Not because he can’t do a job there but sometimes managers go another way. It looks like Erik ten Hag prefers other players.”

Wilson and Murphy on the same page

The Harry Maguire debate has been rumbling on for a long time, and Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson weighed in on the conversation earlier this season.

Speaking on the Footballer’s Football Podcast back in October, Wilson defended the centre-back, and admitted that he would like to have him at Newcastle.

He said: “I’d take him in my team every day of the week! That’s how I rate him.”

But while Wilson and Murphy might believe that Maguire would be a good fit on Tyneside, there is no way that a move is on the horizon.

Newcastle currently have the best defence in the Premier League. Maguire can’t get in the Man United team right now, and he wouldn’t be able to get into Eddie Howe’s either.

He would certainly add more depth in reserve, but that is not what Maguire needs right now at this stage in his career. He is 29 – he needs to be playing every week. That isn’t going to happen at St James’ Park.

When Newcastle sign another centre-back, it will be someone much younger who can eventually take Fabian Schar’s place in the starting XI.

Murphy might think Newcastle could do a lot worse than signing Maguire – and that is true. But we can also do better in terms of building for the future.
