Newcastle United’s summer hopes have been dealt a huge blow as one of their targets has reaffirmed their commitment to their current team.
The Magpies had been hoping for a big summer window in which they can drastically improve the depth in the squad, but more specifically improve the striking options with Callum Wilson likely to leave.
One name that has been mentioned is RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, but speaking to Sport Bild the striker has claimed that he wants to stay at the German club for a long time.
Newcastle suffer £55m transfer blow ahead of a big summer
Newcastle have been tracking Sesko for well over a year now with their interest dating back to 2022, but now they’ve suffered a huge blow as the striker has made a decision on his future.
There was a feeling that Sesko would inevitably make a move to a Premier League team with Manchester United also looking to sign the Slovenian international, but now that doesn’t seem possible.
The 20-year-old was signed for £55m but is believed to be available for £42m now due to a release clause in his contract and given his potential and the ability he’s already shown that could even be a bargain of a deal if things work out.
As a young and exciting forward Sesko could have been an ideal replacement for Wilson and to support Alexander Isak who spends a fair amount of time in the treatment room himself.
On a possible move, Sesko said: “I want to spend a lot of time here because the club suits me well. We’ll see how many years it will be in total.”

The Magpies must look elsewhere for new striker
It’s inevitable that Newcastle will bring in a new forward in the summer as even if they were to keep both Isak and Wilson in the squad it still would be a big risk to go without a third option for the new season.
As players the pair are both brilliant at what they do and you’ll struggle to find a more clinical duo in the Premier League, but their injury record massively lets them down and Newcastle cannot rely on them.
Some other names have been mentioned as possible replacements like Dominic Solanke, Serhou Guirassy and Can Uzun who are all enjoying very good seasons, though there is not once stand out target.
With the Dan Ashworth situation yet to be resolved it’s difficult for Newcastle to focus on their summer plans at the moment, but that will ideally come as soon as they find a new director to replace him.
