How Pochettino feels about selling Conor Gallagher with Newcastle keen

Conor Gallagher is on Newcastle United’s radar heading into the summer transfer window, but he might be about to receive a lifeline at Chelsea.

All roads have appeared to lead towards Gallagher leaving the Blues at the end of the season. There is expected to be a mass exodus at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea needing to recoup some cash after their lavish spending.

Gallagher looked primed for a departure, and almost left in January. He was keen on a move to Newcastle, but was denied the chance to join Eddie Howe’s side.

The 23-year-old has continued to be linked with the Magpies, and a report on Monday claimed that he is a more likely signing for Newcastle than RB Leipzig superstar Dominik Szoboszlai.

However, the imminent arrival of Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea could change everything.

Mauricio Pochettino wants to keep Conor Gallagher at Chelsea

Pochettino is set to be announced as the new Chelsea manager ahead of next season, and he is already making plans about who he likes and who he does not.

The Evening Standard report that Gallagher is a player who Pochettino wants to build his team around and feels can be instrumental. Three other plays are mentioned: Reece James, Mason Mount and Levi Colwill.

The former PSG boss wants a core of homegrown players, which could give Gallagher the chance to finally cement his place in the Chelsea team. The report adds that the midfielder is now keen to stay at Stamford Bridge and work with a manager who trusts him.

Pochettino’s stance could therefore mean that Gallagher to Newcastle is a non-starter. That is a shame, as he looks like a player who could really thrive under Howe’s management. In the words of pundit Ally McCoist, he would be ‘perfect‘.

However, he could now get the chance to do the same under Pochettino, who is set to be tasked with rebuilding a broken Chelsea that has failed massively this season.
