Newcastle United are looking to take advantage of a Chelsea ‘fire sale’ this summer by landing Conor Gallagher from the Blues.

Conor Gallagher has been linked with a move to Tyneside for a while with Newcastle allegedly keen on the Chelsea midfielder in the January transfer window.

At the time, Chelsea weren’t keen to let any players go as they continued their outrageous spending spree under Todd Boehely’s new ownership. However, it now seems that a poor season combined with a huge outlay on players could lead to the Blues having a huge clear-out this summer with Newcastle poised to pounce on Gallagher.

Liverpool are will be Newcastle’s competition for Conor Gallagher

According to The Mirror, Liverpool are sniffing around the London club with their eye on as many as three players, one of which is Conor Gallagher and another also linked with Newcastle recently is Mason Mount.

Liverpool are also having a poor season by their standards so will be keen to add reinforcements this summer in order to propel themselves back into the European places next season.

Despite their 3-0 drubbing yesterday at the hands of Aston Villa, Newcastle are still in the driving seat for the Champions League places thanks to a late winner from Bournemouth over Tottenham. Should Newcastle qualify for the Champions League that will give them the advantage over Liverpool in any negotiations for Gallagher or even Mount.

Gallagher has been reluctant to move from Chelsea

Gallagher has repeatedly said he’d like to stay at Chelsea to establish himself in that first team, but it’s looking like that might be out of his hands this summer. So should he move, you’d expect he’d want to go to a club playing in the Champions League, a club on the up, a club that will match his ambition. That sounds a lot more like Newcastle than Liverpool right now.

Newcastle are working with a few transfer strategies in mind which will all depend on which competitions they’re playing in next season. Whether Conor Gallagher is one of those players who falls into Newcastle’s Champions League targets we’ll not know until the window opens.
