Newcastle United have quickly secured an agreement to sign Aaron Ramsdale on loan from Southampton.
It emerged on Monday that Newcastle United wanted Ramsdale, as they moved for a goalkeeper alternative after missing out on James Trafford to Manchester City.
Ramsdale wanted to join Newcastle, and now he is going to get his wish.
The news was broken by David Ornstein on Tuesday night, with the Athletic journalist reporting that the Magpies have reached an agreement to sign the 27-year-old on loan with an option to buy.

Aaron Ramsdale to Newcastle United loan fee is not ‘heavy’ at all
When news of talks first emerged, the exact amount that a loan deal would cost was unclear. Newcastle United fans were being bombarded by Fabrizio Romano, who insisted that it was going to be a ‘heavy loan fee’.
However, it would appear that loan fee is not too ‘heavy’ after all.
According to Ben Jacobs on X, Newcastle United are going to pay Southampton £4million to sign Ramsdale on loan for the duration of the 2025/26 season.
That fee does not seem unreasonable at all, as the England international gets set to undergo a medical.
It is unclear why the £4million fee was being described as ‘heavy’. In comparison, Chelsea loaned Joao Felix for almost £10million in 2023.
What Aaron Ramsdale’s role at Newcastle United will be
Ramsdale does not want to be on the bench. That is why he decided to leave Arsenal to join Southampton in the summer of 2024.
He is moving to Newcastle United because he believes he can push Nick Pope for the number one jersey, which is exactly what Eddie Howe wants.
However, Ramsdale might initially have to settle for being the Magpies’ deputy.
That is according to Sky Sports’ Keith Downie, who has posted on X that Ramsdale is ‘likely to start the season’ as backup to Pope.
That is not a major surprise, nor is it a major concern for Ramsdale. Given the number of games that Newcastle United will play during the 2025/26 season, there will be plenty of opportunities to prove himself.
Ramsdale is a smart signing for Newcastle, especially as it is only a loan deal with an option to buy as opposed to an obligation.
That means the Magpies are not committed to spending a sum of money they might not want to, while Ramsdale has a clear reason to perform at his best and earn a permanent deal. Everyone is a winner.
