How Aaron Ramsdale really feels about joining Newcastle United as Eddie Howe launches loan bid

Newcastle United are turning their attention to Aaron Ramsdale after missing out on James Trafford.

He had been the Magpies’ top goalkeeper target, but that deal is now off. James Trafford is joining Manchester City, which has forced Eddie Howe to reassess his pursuit of a new goalkeeper.

Newcastle tried to sign Aaron Ramsdale in 2024, and there was even an expectation that he would arrive at St James’ Park and link back up with Howe after the duo worked together at Bournemouth.

Ramsdale joined Southampton instead, where his solid performances were not enough to keep the Saints in the Premier League.

Aaron Ramsdale ‘keen’ on Newcastle United move but no deal in place yet

As Southampton prepare to play in the Championship, Ramsdale could have an immediate route back to the Premier League.

That is because Newcastle United are in talks to sign the 27-year-old. The news was broken on X by Sky Sports’ Keith Downie.

More details have emerged, with the Athletic’s David Ornstein claiming that Newcastle have proposed a loan deal with an option to buy. Ornstein adds that Southampton’s preference is to sell Ramsdale permanently, while a loan deal would require a significant fee up front.

There are also details on the Magpies’ interest from Fabrizio Romano, who has stated on X that Ramsdale is ‘keen’ to become a member of the Newcastle United squad.

Newcastle United fans must trust Eddie Howe’s judgement as Aaron Ramsdale talks intensify

In 2024, there was not a lot of excitement about the prospect of Ramsdale joining Newcastle United.

In 2025, the situation remains the same. If anything, there is even less excitement after the Trafford debacle.

Supporters will question the decision, as Howe aims to provide Nick Pope with more competition. That was the intention with Trafford, but he is heading back to Manchester City.

While the jury is out, fans will keep their fingers crossed that Howe’s judgement is correct, even if Ramsdale would not be the most inspiring signing.

Signing players has proven to be very difficult, but the ones that do arrive prove to be successful more often than not. Howe has a lot of credit in the bank in the transfer market, and will hope that a deal for Ramsdale continues that trend.
