Newcastle United want to sign James Maddison from Leicester City this summer, but a move might depend on what happens with Jude Bellingham.
The teenager is very unlikely to move to Newcastle despite tentative rumours claiming that the Magpies are keen. But Bellingham could be the story of the summer transfer window.
He has been linked with a move away from Borussia Dortmund for a long time, with Liverpool always looking like the most likely destination. However, that no longer appears to be the case.
The 19-year-old is also attracting interest from Real Madrid and Manchester City, and it is the latter who Newcastle will be keeping an eye on.
Manchester City want James Maddison if they can’t get Jude Bellingham
The Northern Echo have reported that if Manchester City are unable to sign Bellingham then they will make a move for Maddison. They were keen in January, and the report states that Newcastle are aware of Pep Guardiola’s desire to bring Maddison to the Etihad.

It could all depend on where Bellingham goes. If he moves to Manchester City then they become an even more terrifying prospect, reuniting the world’s most exciting midfielder with the globe’s most feared striker Erling Haaland.
However, it would at least leave the door open for Newcastle to try to lure Maddison to St James’ Park.
Newcastle’s top target
The Magpies’ interest in Maddison is well documented. Dan Ashworth has tried to sign him in the previous two transfer windows, and had two summer bids rejected. Newcastle were unwilling to meet Leicester’s £60million asking price.
But Eddie Howe has not been deterred, and his club continue to chase the 26-year-old’s signature. He has been described as one of Newcastle’s ‘priority’ targets heading into the summer by i News, who add that he is intrigued by a possible move to the North East.
However, the chance to play for Manchester City will surely be more tempting for Maddison if the opportunity arises. But that could depend on where Bellingham ends up this summer.
