Newcastle United are stepping up their bid to sign James Trafford, 12 months after missing out.

James Trafford came close to joining Newcastle United in 2024, only for the deal to collapse due to the Magpies’ PSR problems.

It was reported that Trafford wanted to sign for Newcastle, and now he could get the chance to make up for lost time if the Toon recruitment team can agree a deal with Burnley.

Whether James Trafford wants to join Newcastle United

Newcastle are in talks to sign Trafford once again, and it appears that his stance regarding a move to the North East has not changed.

That is according to the Daily Mail, who report that Trafford is still interested in joining the Magpies.

Newcastle want Trafford to compete with Nick Pope, so the fact that the 22-year-old would not immediately be the club’s number one does not appear to be an issue.

Newcastle United’s problem continues as Burnley raise asking price

That is encouraging, but the problem lies between Newcastle United and Burnley. As with every transfer, the buyer wants to pay as little as possible, while the seller wants to get every last penny out of the deal.

Trafford believes he is ‘world class’, so the newly-promoted Clarets want a fee that reflects that.

The Daily Mail add that Burnley’s asking price for Trafford is almost £40million. That is more than what Newcastle are willing to pay, with a deal not close between the two clubs.

A deal worth £40million would make him one of Newcastle’s most expensive signings ever. It would be twice as much as what the Magpies paid for Odysseas Vlachodimos last summer, as they did some accounting trickery to comply with PSR.

Burnley’s lofty asking price should not come as a surprise to Newcastle United, who are growing increasingly frustrated at the cost of Premier League players.

Newcastle will not pay inflated fees for Premier League players, much to the frustration of fans who believe the club either need to shop abroad or pay the market rate for domestic talents.
