Callum Wilson is in a difficult situation at Newcastle United right now.
It had looked for all the world that he would leave Newcastle United during the summer transfer window. It was reported that a move away for Callum Wilson was likely, with the Magpies planning to move him on.
However, those plans appeared to change after the 32-year-old suffered a back injury. Will Osula arrived to compliment the Magpies’ current strikers, while Wilson focussed on his rehab.
It is a rehab that is still ongoing, with Wilson yet to return from injury. His absence continues, with Eddie Howe stating that Wilson should return after the next international break.
His fitness issues continue to be massively frustrating, while there are is also the issue of his contract at St James’ Park. Wilson’s current deal expires in 2025, which means he could leave the club on a free transfer next summer.

Premier League clubs interested in Callum Wilson
With Wilson in the final 12 months of his contract, there is a chance for a club to potentially grab a bargain in January.
If Newcastle are not going to give him a new deal then they need to sell him in January, as it would be unwise to let him go on a free in the summer.
And there appears to be a bit of a queue forming for his signature.
According to the Sun, Fulham and Brentford are interested in signing Wilson when the January transfer window opens.
They report that Brentford see the England international as an ideal replacement for Ivan Toney, who left the Bees to sign for Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia during the summer transfer window.
How Callum Wilson feels about leaving Newcastle
Given his goalscoring ability, it is no surprise that Premier League clubs are keen to acquire the £20million man.
And they might be in luck, with the Sun sharing details on how Wilson feels about a fresh start.
They report that Wilson is open to a move away from Newcastle United, where he has been since the summer of 2020.
Interestingly, it was noted in the summer that Wilson was keen for a fresh challenge.
Wilson departure would put pressure on Newcastle youngster
It would be understandable if Wilson left. He is not going to replace Alexander Isak as the Magpies’ first choice, which means he will merely be a backup option.
But if Wilson were to go, it would put Will Osula under a lot of pressure at St James’ Park.
The 21-year-old arrived to provide more cover for Isak and Wilson, with the view to eventually overtaking Wilson. However, it is probably a bit early for that to happen.
Osula is a project player for Newcastle, and that project is still in its infancy. He has only made one Toon appearance so far, but Howe is happy with Osula’s progress since arriving from Sheffield United.
Right now, Osula is the main backup for Isak. However, that is only because Wilson is unavailable. When everyone is fit, Newcastle have a good range of strikers, with Osula on hand to develop his game and play when necessary.
However, for him to be Isak’s main understudy would be a big ask for a player who is yet to score a Premier League goal.
