Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Mason Mount this summer, but Graham Potter has vowed that he would like to keep the midfielder at Stamford Bridge.
Mount is currently in talks with Chelsea over a new contract, but could potentially be sold if he fails to sign on the dotted line before the summer transfer window.
That would be bad news for Potter, as he has admitted that the 24-year-old is currently in his plans for next season.
The midfielder’s Chelsea contract expires in 2024, meaning this summer is their last chance to get big money for him if he is not going to sign an extension.
It has been reported that Mount could be available for £50million, which could make him an affordable option for Newcastle. The Daily Mail have reported that Eddie Howe’s side is interested in the England international.

Graham Potter wants to keep Mason Mount at Chelsea
Chelsea manager Potter has spoke to the media ahead of their game against Leicester, and was asked about Mount’s future.
“I’ve spoken to him several times about his situation, football, and life generally,” he told the Daily Mail.
“My feelings for Mason are clear. He’s a fantastic person firstly, but sometimes these things happen. They’re complicated, and it’s best I speak little about it, let them get on with it in deciding what is right for both parties.”
The former Brighton boss was then asked if Mount was in his Chelsea plans for next season, to which he replied: “Yes.”
Clock is ticking as Newcastle watch on
While Potter might want to keep Mount, it remains to be seen if he will stay at Stamford Bridge. It sounds like there is a very real chance that he could be available this summer, with talks over an extension stalling.
That could open the door for Newcastle, who are interested in signing him. However, there is competition from Liverpool and Manchester United.
Even if Mount is sold, it could be very difficult to compete with those clubs – unless we decide to smash our wage structure. It has been reported by the Guardian that Mount has been offered £180,000-a-week to stay at Chelsea, which is more than anyone earns at St James’ Park right now.
Those wages wouldn’t be an issue for Liverpool or Man United, but it could be a problem for Newcastle.
For now, all Howe’s side can do is watch on and wait to see if Mount becomes available. Potter wants to keep him for next season, but he might not get his wish.
