Newcastle United are seriously interested in signing Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini this summer, and he has already shared his verdict on moving to the Premier League.

The Magpies look like they have signed their right winger in Anthony Elanga, now Eddie Howe is targeting a centre-back and is eyeing a move for 21-year-old Giorgio Scalvini.

Despite a season disrupted by injury, Scalvini is still in Newcastle United’s thinking, with Howe seeing a lot of potential in the young defender.

Reports on Friday stated that Scalvini is now Newcastle’s top target. That comes after it was revealed that Newcastle are close to signing Elanga this summer. The Magpies are nearing an agreement believed to be in the region of £55m to get the Swede on Tyneside.

With that deal looking like it will get done in the next few days, Newcastle now have their sights on Scalvini. A Premier League move is on the cards, and the Italian has already shared his verdict on joining a club in England.

Premier League move is a dream for Newcastle United target Giorgio Scalvini

Scalvini will be the sixth Italian Newcastle player in the club’s history if he completes a move to Tyneside this summer, but a deal looks to be nowhere near complete yet.

Reports suggest that Newcastle value Scalvini around £30m. However, reports from Italy in June stated that Newcastle must offer as much as £43m for Scalvini to get Atalanta to sell up.

Despite that, the Italian himself could try and force his way out of the club to make his dream move to England this summer. Speaking to Corriere dello Sport in 2023, Scalvini was asked about playing in the Premier League during his career.

He said: “For me it’s the best league there is, for the intensity. Once in my career, I don’t even know when, I’d like to play there.”

Scalvini has previously been linked with moves to the Premier League, with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City interested in him. However, it now looks like Newcastle are the frontrunners for his signature after his recent injuries.

Newcastle United must make Giorgio Scalvini’s Premier League aspirations come true

There is so much potential in Scalvini, but there will naturally be concern from the Newcastle fans due to his worrying injury record. However, the Magpies’ medical team has been improved over the last 12 months, with James Bunce joining Newcastle as a performance director and significantly reducing the number of days lost to injury in comparison to the 2023/24 campaign.

Champions League football is returning to St James’ Park next season. Howe needs all the help he can get to give Newcastle the best chance of being competitive in their return to the competition.

Scalvini has Champions League experience already and has played in some huge games at such a young age. Signing him would not only give Howe a talented young defender but also a player who knows what it takes to be successful in Europe.

The Italian was a big part of Atalanta’s Europa League-winning campaign in 2024, helping beat an unstoppable Bayer Leverkusen side 3-0.

Gian Piero Gasperini says Scalvini is destined for greatness, and Newcastle want him to achieve greatness with them for years to come.
