Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips should be begging for a move to Newcastle United in January.
That is the view of former Premier League forward Gabby Agbonlahor, who is adamant that Kalvin Phillips needs to leave Man City ‘for the sake of his career’.
All signs appear to point towards the 27-year-old leaving the Etihad Stadium at the start of 2024. He is once again on the fringes of the Man City team, while he needs to think about his England career ahead of Euro 2024. He was named on the bench on Monday as the Three Lions drew 1-1 with North Macedonia.
Now Phillips will return to domestic duties, which will likely lead to even more time on the bench.
That is why he is being linked with a move away, and why Newcastle are considering an approach for the former Leeds United star.
Phillips is a loan target for Newcastle, who are looking to sign a midfielder following Sandro Tonali’s suspension.
It has been reported that Phillips is interested in a switch to St James’ Park, and TalkSPORT pundit Gabby Agbonlahor believes it would be a brilliant move for him.

Agbonlahor tells Kalvin Phillips to sign for Newcastle
Agbonlahor has spoke about Phillips’ Man City future on TalkSPORT on Wednesday morning, and believes he should be seeking a move to Newcastle where he would ‘walk into’ Eddie Howe’s team.
“This is the biggest one in the Premier League, he has to go for the sake of his career,” he said.
“27 years old, he should be playing the best football of his career.
“Outstanding at Leeds, he has only made 16 appearances for City. That’s not enough.
“When you have got a player like Rodri, who is never injured, never really gets sent off apart from the one he got the other week, he is going to play most the games, Pep has shown that he doesn’t trust Phillips.
“So if I’m Phillips, I’m saying, let’s get this done. Get me to Newcastle. They have lost Tonali to a year ban, he walks into that Newcastle team and fits that defensive midfielder role at Newcastle.”
Newcastle move could be ideal for Phillips
At this moment in time, Newcastle United and Kalvin Phillips feel like a match made in heaven. He needs regular minutes, and Newcastle need a midfielder.
The £42million man is someone who has been on the club’s radar before so it would be far from a panic buy, while he is a player who could have a role at St James’ Park even when Tonali is back from his ban.
In that respect, Agbonlahor is right. He should be pushing for a move to Newcastle when the January transfer window opens.
The only debateable thing that Agbonlahor has said is that he walks into the Toon starting XI. I don’t think that is necessarily the case, as the Magpies have a lot of talented midfielders who have been playing a lot better than Phillips.
But he would provide greater depth and something a bit different, which is why Howe will be eager for the club to get this deal over the line in January.
