Joe Cole thinks Gareth Southgate has told £42m player to leave after links with Newcastle

Newcastle United want to sign Kalvin Phillips in January, and Joe Cole believes the midfielder has received fresh encouragement to seek a transfer.

The 27-year-old has been a key player for England in recent years, and played a key role in the Three Lions reaching the final of Euro 2020. Now Euro 2024 is on the horizon, and Phillips wants to be involved.

However, that might be difficult if he is not getting the chance to play at club level. That is the situation he currently finds himself in, with Phillips completely out of favour at Manchester City.

This has led to speculation that he could leave in January, with Newcastle interested in signing the midfielder on loan. And their interest could intensify now that it has been claimed that alternative target Ruben Neves is going nowhere.

That could be good news for Phillips, who is reportedly keen on a move to St James’ Park.

Joe Cole on Kalvin Phillips and his future

England were in action against North Macedonia on Monday night, with Kalvin Phillips adding another cap to his collection. However, it came off the bench as he replaced Trent Alexander-Arnold late on during the 1-1 draw.

Phillips was not named in the starting lineup, and pundit Joe Cole believes that could be a message from manager Gareth Southgate telling the £42million man to go and get some minutes at club level.

“Kalvin Phillips not playing,” Cole said on Channel 4.

“Maybe that’s a message, Kalvin go and get some minutes somewhere because that’s his shirt next to Declan.”

Newcastle can rescue Phillips in January

Phillips has been a regular for England in the past. He is clearly a player who Gareth Southgate admires and trusts.

However, he is not able to trust him as much if he is not playing regular football.

That is why he needs to secure a move away from Manchester City in January, and Newcastle look like the favourites to secure his signature.

The Magpies need a midfielder amid Sandro Tonali’s ongoing ban, and Phillips now looks like the frontrunner ahead of Neves.

Newcastle have the capacity to rescue Phillips in January. In turn, he has the ability to improve an already impressive midfield.

He is a player who Newcastle have been linked with for many years, but this is the only time that a deal has felt possible. It would suit all parties, so let’s hope that we can reach an agreement with Man City.
