Newcastle United’s summer transfer window is yet to really get up and running with the new campaign now just weeks away.
It has been a frustrating market for Eddie Howe who remains waiting to see his first big signing come through the doors at St James’ Park.
The window started off well for Newcastle with the smart addition of Lloyd Kelly on a free following his exit from Bournemouth.
But the Toon have not kicked on from there with two backup goalkeepers and a young prospect for the future having since been added.
Newcastle jet off to Japan next week for their pre-season tour but it is not looking promising that the Magpies are going to have a new, big name addition to show off to their fans in Asia.
However, there is one player who they have now been scouting for months who could emerge as a real option for Paul Mitchell over the coming weeks.

Newcastle have been scouting Spaniard for months
The appointment of Mitchell as the new sporting director will have provided Howe and the fans with a lot of optimism for what is to come on Tyneside.
Mitchell has shown his impressive recruitment skills across the clubs he’s previously worked with having brought the likes of Heung-min Son to the Premier League.
However, he is still waiting on his first signing for Newcastle who are said to be looking to sign Malick Thiaw from AC Milan.
Defence is clearly an area which Howe is keen to bolster this summer with the Toon also monitoring a young full-back from Spain.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle are one of the sides who are showing a keen interest in the UD Almeria right-back Marc Pubill.
The transfer expert does insist that the Magpies have not made an approach for the 21-year-old just yet but they are interested.
Newcastle have been scouting Pubill for a number of months now but there is nothing advanced or close between the two clubs.
And it is not just the Toon who are showing an interest with a number of Italian sides – including Roma – also on the scene.
Newcastle could land their Kieran Trippier successor in Marc Pubill
Right-back could well be an area which Newcastle find themselves needing to add to this summer.
Kieran Trippier’s future at Newcastle is in doubt with interest coming from Saudi Arabia in the England international.
In Pubill, Newcastle could land themselves a really exciting young full-back who the Almeria website claim to be a ‘fast player’ who is a crossing expert.
Granted, Pubill still has little experience at the top level and has not returned anywhere near the same figures which Trippier did last season.
But this is a player who is gaining a lot of interest from across Europe despite having only played 11 times in a top flight division.
