Newcastle United are seriously interested in signing Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini this summer, and Fabrizio Romano has shared the latest he has heard about a potential deal.

A new centre-back is on the cards for the Magpies this summer, and the focus is now on bringing one in after advancing in their talks for Anthony Elanga.

Discussions with Burnley for James Trafford appear to have taken the back burner in the last week, perhaps because Newcastle United have agreed personal terms with Trafford, and it is now just a case of ironing out the transfer fee.

With those two deals nearing completion, Newcastle are in talks with Atalanta for Giorgio Scalvini. The defender has impressed since making his professional debut at the age of 17 four years ago, but struggled with injuries during the 2024/25 campaign.

Newcastle will conduct extensive medical tests on Scalvini to ensure his injury problems are a thing of the past, a plan which is likely similar to Tino Livramento, who had only recently recovered from an ACL injury when he signed for the Magpies.

With Newcastle holding talks with Atalanta over the weekend, Fabrizio Romano has shared the latest he has heard about a possible deal.

Newcastle United facing competition for Giorgio Scalvini

After initial enquiries, Newcastle were told that Scalvini is ‘unsellable’. Atalanta value the defender and realise what a promising career he has ahead of him.

It is going to be difficult to get a deal done, but Newcastle are hoping for some sort of breakthrough this weekend.

Romano shared on X that Scalvini is one of Newcastle’s top targets this summer, likely beside Elanga and Trafford. However, the football transfer reporter went in depth on what is really happening with the deal.

“Several Premier League clubs remain attentive to the situation of Scalvini. We told you exclusively about Newcastle and Giorgio Scalvini is one of Newcastle’s priorities for the defence,” he said on his YouTube channel.

“Newcastle are ready to make some important economic effort to sign Scalvini but we know dealing with Atalanta is never easy. The president, [Antonio] Percassi always maintains a point that it’s very hard when it comes to selling players of this level like Giorgio Scalvini.

“But for Newcastle, [he’s] an important defender in this market and they want to make an attempt.

“Newcastle wants to try [to sign Scalvini] but I believe that there will not only be Newcastle in for Scalvini, it will be a race between even more teams, and the ball is in Atalanta’s hands.”

Newcastle United need to get negotiations done fast for Giorgio Scalvini

With other teams monitoring the situation, there will naturally be the fear that Scalvini’s head could turn and prioritise a different club, despite Newcastle’s admiration.

However, a boost for Newcastle is that they appear to be the only club in talks for the defender. They have effectively stolen a march on all of those other interested parties and shown their desire to bring him in.

In 2023, Scalvini said he wants to play in the Premier League. The defender’s dream could come true if Newcastle’s offer to him is good enough. The likes of Liverpool and Manchester City have been linked with Scalvini in the past, but now it is Newcastle’s turn to share their admiration and try to make a deal happen.

Reports have stated that Scalvini could cost Newcastle around £40m this summer, a big fee but one that Eddie Howe will be happy to part with for such a talented young defender.
