Newcastle transfer news: Toon could be ‘front of the queue’ for Joe Gomez

Joe Gomez could reportedly be a transfer option for Newcastle United this summer – if they avoid relegation to the Championship.

This summer could be wild for Toon fans if the club maintain their Premier League status. We got a taste of the new transfer ambition during January, and it will only increase in the summer when more players are available.

Of course, the main thing right now is survival. It’s looking good at the moment though, with Eddie Howe’s side currently four points clear of the bottom three.

Another win on Saturday away at Brentford and our future in the top flight will look even more likely.

If we do survive, the calibre of player we could bring to St James’ Park will likely increase. And according to the Athletic, a Premier League winner could be on the Magpies’ radar.

The report states that both Newcastle and Aston Villa are ‘likely to be near the front of the queue’ for the 24-year-old defender.

Despite Liverpool’s fantastic form, Gomez is having a season to forget. After returning to fitness, he’s only played 13 times in all competitions. He’s started once in the Premier League, and that was Saturday’s 3-1 win over Norwich.

Gomez once looked like a future star at Anfield, but injury has stunted his progress.

He missed basically all of last season, and now he has Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate ahead of him in the pecking order.

Despite his immense talent, it looks like he might be forced to leave Liverpool this summer if he wants regular first-team football.

And if he does become available, it would be no surprise to see Newcastle make a move. He’s young, has Premier League experience, and could fill that elusive second centre-back position that the Magpies failed to sign in January.
