Newcastle United may suddenly be in the market for a midfielder, and a long-term target is now very much available.
At the start of the year, Newcastle United were desperate for reinforcements in the middle of the park. Sandro Tonali was suspended, while Joelinton and Joe Willock were injured. On top of that, there were fears that Joelinton could be sold in the summer due to his contract situation.
Since then, Joelinton has signed a new contract, while he is back to full fitness alongside Willock. As for Tonali, his ban is almost over.
That has negated the need for Newcastle United to bring in anyone in that position, but it was reported on Wednesday that the Magpies have been looking at centre-midfielders to possibly sign this summer.
You would assume that would likely depend on how much money the club has left to spend after they secure their top targets, with Newcastle having a transfer budget of £100million.
That might make it difficult for the Magpies to bring in a central midfielder as well, but the chance to snap up a free agent has now emerged.

Adrien Rabiot is released by Juventus
Adrien Rabiot’s Juventus contract expired at the end of June, and the Serie A giants have now announced that the Frenchman will not be signing a new deal.
He is now officially a free agent, and is on the lookout for a new club. Given how talented the 29-year-old is, you have to assume that a string of Europe’s top sides will be trying to secure his signature.
And it would not be a surprise if Newcastle United are thrown into the mix, as they have been linked with the France international before.
Ever since PIF bought the club from Mike Ashley, Rabiot has been rumoured to be on Newcastle’s radar.
The rumours have usually come from Italy, with TuttoJuve reporting in March that Newcastle are interested in bringing Rabiot to the Premier League.
Newcastle United do not need Rabiot despite rumours
Now they have the chance to do that, with the ‘extraordinary‘ midfielder available on a free transfer.
But while Rabiot is very much available, it is extremely unlikely that he will end up at St James’ Park.
Rabiot has been linked with Newcastle a lot over the past few years, but he has never felt like a genuine target. It has always felt as if the Magpies have just been used in the media to drum up interest from elsewhere.
Now Rabiot needs a lot of interest, as he becomes a free agent. But that interest will not come from Eddie Howe’s side, who do not need a midfielder like Rabiot ahead of the 2024/25 season.
Newcastle’s starting trio will be Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali this season, and anyone who arrives will act as backup to that trio. Is Rabiot going to join a Newcastle side that offers no European football to sit on the bench? Absolutely not.
And are Newcastle going to offer the wages that a free agent like Rabiot will command? Absolutely not.
