Newcastle United desperately need midfield reinforcements right now, but there is no way back for Isaac Hayden.
The 28-year-old has seen his loan spell with Standard Liege terminated, which has led to some Newcastle fans speculating that he could be reintroduced into Eddie Howe’s squad due to a lack of midfield options.
However, that will not be happening. Instead, Isaac Hayden is going to leave Newcastle once again before the transfer window closes on Thursday night.
That is the view of HITC Football insider Graeme Bailey, who has spoke to Geordie Boot Boys about Hayden’s future heading into the dying embers of the January transfer window.
Lots of Championship clubs interested in Isaac Hayden
“You would expect Isaac Hayden to leave at some point,” he said.
“It’s a strange one because I know Sheffield Wednesday had an interest in him, but obviously they’ve got Jeff Hendrick and there’s a few issues around that.
“I still think we’ll see Hayden leave before Thursday. He’s someone a lot of Championship clubs want, but a lot of Championship clubs are surprised by how much money he is on, which is a tale of quite a few of these Newcastle squad players.”

Wages are an issue for Newcastle
There was initially a lot of talk about Hayden going out on loan again, but that has all suddenly gone very quiet.
As Bailey says, one of the issues is his wages. He is obviously still on a Premier League contract, having signed a six-year deal with the Magpies back in 2020. That means that Hayden could still be with the club until 2026.
But a move away needs to come to fruition in the coming days, even if it is just a loan exit. Obviously Newcastle would love to move Hayden on permanently, but it probably won’t be possible given how late it is in the window and how little clubs seem to be spending.
As long as he leaves, that is the main thing. Hayden needs to get out there and play regular football, and hopefully he gets the chance to showcase his quality in the Championship.
