Newcastle United will surely look to strengthen their squad this summer.
Indeed, it has been a relatively fallow period on the transfer front for Newcastle United over the past few windows, such have been the PSR restrictions in play at St James’ Park.
Still, Newcastle insiders think they can spend this summer, having sold players while keeping their powder dry when it comes to incomings.
That should, at least in theory, allow Eddie Howe to bring players in this summer as Newcastle look to build on their Carabao Cup victory.
Newcastle have qualified for the Conference League, meaning even if they do not reach either the Europa League or Champions League, there will still be an added strain on Howe’s squad next season.
With that in mind, players have been touted as targets. One of those is England international Angel Gomes, who has just rejected a Premier League deal.

Newcastle United transfer target Angel Gomes rejects huge Premier League contract
Newcastle have been linked with Gomes for a while and the midfielder is out of contract at Lille at the end of the season.
As such, the former Manchester United youngster is in a strong bargaining position, able to demand a high salary and signing on fee given a transfer fee won’t be involved.
According to The Guardian, the 24-year-old has rejected a deal from West Ham worth around £100k-per-week.
Barcelona are also said to be keen on Gomes, so the race to sign him looks both fierce and potentially costly.
Sanctioning Angel Gomes’ salary demands would be a major Newcastle United statement
Gomes is reportedly looking for £150k-per-week, which would make him one of Newcastle’s highest-paid players.
Bruno Guimaraes is currently the highest-paid player at Newcastle, albeit that could change if Alexander Isak’s potential new contract is signed. In that event, Isak could be paid £200k-per-week at Newcastle.
| Player | Reported wages |
| Bruno Guimaraes | £160k-per-week |
| Joelinton | £150k-per-week |
| Anthony Gordon | £150k-per-week |
| Kieran Trippier | £120k-per-week |
| Alexander Isak | £120k-per-week |
| Sandro Tonali | £120k-per-week |
| Matt Targett | £100k-per-week |
| Lloyd Kelly (on loan at Juventus) | £100k-per-week |
Still, Gomes would be earning more than most of his teammates. At some point, Newcastle surely will have to raise their wage structure but to do that for a player who may not start ahead of Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali or Joelinton in central midfield seems unwise.
Newcastle may have to look elsewhere for reinforcement…
