They say you should never go back, but that is something Newcastle United would love Elliot Anderson to do.
The midfielder left Newcastle United in 2024, forced to depart his boyhood club because of PSR. The Magpies sold Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest for £35million, doing whatever they could to avoid a points deduction.
Since that moment, Elliot Anderson has gone from strength to strength. He has been immense at the City Ground, and now looks a certainty to start for England at the 2026 World Cup.
With every passing game, more and more Toon fans want to see Anderson return to St James’ Park. That will not be straightforward, as Newcastle do not have a buyback clause for Anderson.
But it is something the club are considering, with Geordie Boot Boys recently reporting that Newcastle United would love to re-sign Anderson.

Elliot Anderson interested in Newcastle United return
The Magpies’ interest in Anderson has now been reported by the i Paper, who have provided more details on the possibility of the lad from Whitley Bay coming back to Tyneside.
They report that Newcastle United have looked into the possibility of signing Anderson back from Nottingham Forest, just over a year after letting him go.
The i Paper add that Anderson would be interested in a return to St James’ Park. That is not to say he is pushing to leave Nottingham Forest, but the appeal to re-join Newcastle is understandable given they are his boyhood club and he shared a good relationship with Eddie Howe.
Howe always speaks positively of Anderson, bemoaning the fact the club had to let him go in 2024.
The Newcastle United manager is now looking to rewrite history, as the Magpies weigh up the prospect of bringing the academy graduate home.
Why Nottingham Forest appointing Sean Dyche could hurt Newcastle United’s Elliot Anderson pursuit
However, that prospect may have just become slightly trickier.
That is because Nottingham Forest have just appointed a new manager, with Sean Dyche arriving to replace Ange Postecoglou. He is their third head coach of the season, having started the campaign with Nuno Espirito Santo.
It has been chaos at the City Ground, and they very much looked like a club in freefall. That would have made Anderson’s future at the club somewhat perilous, with relegation to the Championship a distinct possibility.
| Position | Team | Played MP | Won W | Drawn D | Lost L | For GF | Against GA | Diff GD | Points Pts |
| 16 | 8 | 2 | 2 | 4 | 7 | 13 | -6 | 8 | |
| 17 | 8 | 2 | 1 | 5 | 9 | 15 | -6 | 7 | |
| 18 | 8 | 1 | 2 | 5 | 5 | 15 | -10 | 5 | |
| 19 | 8 | 1 | 1 | 6 | 6 | 18 | -12 | 4 | |
| 20 | 8 | 0 | 2 | 6 | 5 | 16 | -11 | 2 |
However, there is a real feeling that Dyche can remedy the situation. His style of management seems perfectly suited to what Forest need, and there is certainly enough quality within that squad to surge up the Premier League table.
In turn, that will give them a better chance of keeping Anderson or at least commanding as high a fee as possible.
