Former Premier League ace Don Hutchison has weighed in on Newcastle United accepting a record offer of £130m for Alexander Isak.

After asking to leave the club in July, the 25-year-old’s move to Merseyside is all but confirmed.

Alexander Isak has taken his medical ahead of a move to Liverpool for a British record transfer fee of £130m. Newcastle United have already started to reinvest the money, having agreed a fee with Brentford for Yoane Wissa.

The Magpies will be without their star striker, but will be pleased with the money they have received from him. Isak was adamant he wanted to leave Newcastle, even after members of the club’s board visited his house in a last-ditch attempt to keep him at the club past the summer transfer window.

There are mixed feelings about Isak’s transfer fee, with some saying Liverpool have got the better of Newcastle by getting their asking price down. However, Don Hutchison completely disagrees.

Don Hutchison says Newcastle United were not ‘bullied’ into selling Alexander Isak

Newcastle have doubled their money for Isak, who signed for £63m from Real Sociedad in 2022. The Sweden international went on a sensational goalscoring run over the last two seasons, netting over 20 goals in the last two seasons for the Magpies.

However, he will now be doing his goalscoring for Liverpool, who never backed down from the deal, even after their £110m offer was rejected in August.

The final fee is less than the £150m that Newcastle were looking for, but Hutchison has backed the Magpies for their approach.

“I don’t believe Newcastle got ‘bullied’ into selling Isak,” he said.

“In the end, they have done what’s best for the football club in getting top money (doubled what they paid for him) and at the same time getting two strikers in… Get rid and move on”

Newcastle United had to sell Alexander Isak this summer

Isak completely ruined his reputation at Newcastle, telling Eddie Howe he did not want to be reintegrated into first-team training in the hope it would help him get that move to Liverpool he was so desperate for.

It was clear that Isak’s position at Newcastle had become untenable; there was very little chance of him regaining the trust of the fans after his actions.

The Magpies will be in a better place without the burden of Isak hanging over them, as well as the two quality strikers they have signed this summer.

Wissa is a proven Premier League star, while Woltemade is a top young player who has finally got a big move away from the Bundesliga.

It is just a shame that Newcastle fans will remember Isak for how he has conducted himself throughout the summer, rather than the fantastic contributions he made over his three years at the club.
