Eddie Howe needs Newcastle United sporting director Paul Mitchell to work his magic over the next couple of weeks.
It has been a frustrating summer for Newcastle United, with the Magpies making no signings so far that improve Eddie Howe’s starting XI. That is a concern, with the first Premier League game of the season just days away.
Marc Guehi would improve Newcastle’s starting XI. He is the club’s top centre-back target, with Newcastle confident they can sign Guehi from Crystal Palace after submitting a third offer.
But the Magpies also need to bring in a right winger, which has proven to be even more difficult.
Newcastle’s list of targets is shortening
Michael Olise was Eddie Howe’s top target, but he has gone to Bayern Munich. Pedro Neto has also gone elsewhere, with the Portuguese speedster signing for Chelsea.
Elsewhere, Crysencio Summerville has joined West Ham, while Jarrod Bowen is too expensive for Newcastle.
Paul Mitchell’s list of targets is shortening, with Noni Madueke now emerging as Newcastle’s top target.
It has been reported that Newcastle could approach Chelsea for Madueke, with the 22-year-old’s future up in the air.

How Eddie Howe feels about Noni Madueke
Madueke is an interesting option for Newcastle. He has endured a mixed time at Chelsea, but really started to impress at the back end of last season. Mauricio Pochettino even called him ‘amazing‘ after a win over Tottenham Hotspur.
However, the influx of signings could result in Chelsea moving the attacker on, which is an opportunity that Eddie Howe could relish.
According to iNews, Howe is a fan of Madueke, who could leave Stamford Bridge before the transfer window closes on August 30th.
iNews add that Newcastle officials have a good relationship with their Chelsea equivalents, which could help move a deal along if the Magpies decide to make a move for the England Under-21 international.
Madueke only needs to look at Anthony Gordon for inspiration
Madueke is not the blockbuster winger that Newcastle fans were hoping for, but he is a young talent with a lot of potential.
That will appeal to Howe, who has a great reputation for making players better. He has done it with so many players on Tyneside, with Will Osula expected to benefit from Howe’s coaching.
The same could happen for Madueke, and he only needs to look at Anthony Gordon to see the impact that Howe could have on his career.
When Gordon joined Newcastle, he was a player with potential. He was quick and skilful, but lacked end product. He was not a reliable player.
However, that has completely changed. Gordon was one of Newcastle’s best players last season, getting double figures for goals and assists. The 23-year-old became one of Howe’s most reliable players, becoming a difference-maker in the final third and someone who can be a match-winner.
That is what Madueke needs, and it is something he could achieve if he swaps Chelsea for Newcastle United.
