Newcastle United face the very real prospect of going without another new defensive signing this summer.
Despite the fact that Eddie Howe spoke of needing to fix issues in the backline even at the end of last season, only Lloyd Kelly had arrived to bolster ranks until Deadline Day.
Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi was a leading target but it now appears as if a deal will not be coming off, with Newcastle pulling out of talks with the Eagles.
It means Howe could have only Fabian Schar, Dan Burn and Emil Krafth in central areas alongside Kelly. Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman are still months from returning, leaving Newcastle light at the back.
Guehi wasn’t the only name linked.
Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah, hailed as “impressive” by former manager Graham Potter, was also reportedly discussed at St James’ Park.
Still, Palace could in fact be keeping Guehi and still make a move for the Blues outcast.

Crystal Palace weighing up move for Trevoh Chalobah
According to Sky Sports’ LIVE blog (15:35 BST on 30/08/2024), the Eagles are discussing the prospect of making a move.
They have reportedly been interested in the player for a while and are weighing up whether or not to formalise their interest, with new defender Chadi Riad having suffered an injury in the Carabao Cup earlier this week.
Trevoh Chalobah has not been keen to join Newcastle
Newcastle may well have been interested in a move for Chalobah but it seems the feeling has not been particularly mutual.
Indeed, speaking to Geordie Boot Boys last month, HITC Football insider Graeme Bailey revealed the defender had never shown any willingness to relocate from London to Newcastle.
With that in mind, a move to Palace would obviously suit what the player is reportedly looking for.
They could end up with Chalobah and Guehi, while Newcastle end up with nothing…
