Club now want to sell ‘phenomenal’ Newcastle target, they’re already planning to sign a replacement

Newcastle United and Kalvin Phillips could be on a collision course, but it remains to be seen what type of deal it will be – if there really is a deal to be done.

The 28-year-old continues to be heavily linked with a move to Newcastle United, who are looking to bring in a midfielder to fill the void left by Sandro Tonali, who is banned for the rest of the season.

Kalvin Phillips is eager leave Manchester City in January, as he goes in search of regular minutes ahead of Euro 2024.

Whether he will get that at Newcastle remains to be seen, and could be a decisive factor in whether or not he arrives at St James’ Park next month.

Eddie Howe is certainly keen, but a new report from Sky Sports suggests that the two clubs see Phillips’ future slightly differently.

Manchester City want to sell Kalvin Phillips

According to Sky Sports, Newcastle are interested in signing Phillips from Manchester City in January. However, they are keen on a loan deal.

In contrast, Man City would prefer to sell the 28-year-old next month.

They appear to be ready to cut their losses on Phillips, and Sky Sports add that Pep Guardiola’s side are already looking for a defensive midfielder to replace him.

That certainly makes a move away from the Etihad even more probable for Phillips.

Loan with an option to buy could be Newcastle’s best option

But if Newcastle are going to be the lucky club that signs the ‘phenomenal‘ midfielder, they might have to agree to a compromise with Man City.

Newcastle want a loan. Man City want a permanent transfer. Something will have to give, so the Magpies’ best option might be to propose a loan deal with either an option or obligation to buy if certain criteria is met.

It all depends on how highly Howe and his staff rate Phillips. If they just view him as a stop-gap for the rest of the season while Tonali is suspended then they might be reluctant to propose a deal that could have long-term ramifications.

But if they believe he is a player who can have a future at Newcastle even when Tonali is available then a loan with an option to buy could be the best course of action.
