Newcastle are now in talks to sign 28-year-old who Kieran Trippier thinks is ‘phenomenal’

With the January transfer window looming, Newcastle United are making their move as they look to get the month off to a fast start.

The Magpies are looking for reinforcements in multiple positions, one of which is midfield. That is because of Sandro Tonali’s suspension, with the Italian unable to play until August 2024.

There was a lot of talk about Ruben Neves arriving, but he has decided to stay with Al Hilal. That has allowed Kalvin Phillips to emerge as the club’s number one target.

It has been claimed that he is keen to make the move to Tyneside, as he looks to rescue his England career ahead of Euro 2024.

He would be at risk of missing out if he were to stay at Manchester City, with Pep Guardiola recently admitting that he does not envision the 28-year-old in his team.

Instead, he could be on his way to Newcastle, with a new report claiming that Dan Ashworth is making his move.

Newcastle in talks with Man City to sign Kalvin Phillips

According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle have now opened talks with Manchester City about signing Kalvin Phillips on loan.

They report that Man City are looking to get rid of the midfielder, and that any loan deal will likely include an option to buy.

TEAMtalk add that a move to Juventus is possibly appealing, but he would rather join Newcastle where it will likely take less time for him to settle in.

A move to St James’ Park will see him play alongside a few players he already knows, mainly from the England camp. Phillips has represented his country alongside Nick Pope, Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier, with the latter previously speaking very highly about him.

Trippier once called Phillips a ‘phenomenal’ player back when he was with Leeds United, but his move to Manchester City has not gone to plan.

All roads appear to lead towards him leaving, with Newcastle looking like his most likely destination. It could be the perfect move for him, with Eddie Howe breathing new life into so many careers since becoming Toon boss.

With talks underway, Phillips could be next to benefit from the genius of Howe.
