Newcastle United signing Dominic Solanke would be an ‘excellent’ bit of business.
That is the view of former Premier League forward Chris Sutton, who has spoke to the Daily Mail about the Magpies’ reported interest in the Bournemouth striker.
It was claimed this week that Newcastle launched an enquiry about the 26-year-old, asking Bournemouth how much it would cost to sign him during the January transfer window.
The Magpies were told that a deal would not be happening, while Eddie Howe has since claimed that the reports surrounding an approach from Newcastle are false.
But Chris Sutton believes that Dominic Solanke would be a good signing for the Magpies, while he also believes that Arsenal should be making a move for him.
Chris Sutton is in favour of Newcastle signing Dominic Solanke
Following rumours of Newcastle showing an interest in Solanke, Sutton has explained to the Daily Mail that he thinks the former Liverpool man would be a good addition at St James’ Park.
“That would be an excellent move,” he said.
“A lot of competition for places already, you could say in that, in that striking position with Isak and Wilson.
“Whether Solanke is an upgrade or not, he’s a player who I rate highly especially this season, the more I’ve seen of him.
“I think he’s finding himself. He knows his game now. You could have questioned his goalscoring record in the past, but at this moment in time, I think that Newcastle are right to go for him.
“I know Arsenal have got this FFP issue and what have you, whether they can spend big money but I’m surprised Arsenal haven’t made some sort of move for him. Maybe they have.”

Solanke would be a good signing for Newcastle
I have to say I agree with Sutton. I also think Solanke would be a good signing for Newcastle.
He fits the bill for what we are looking for. We need more cover for Alexander Isak, and he has proven himself to be reliable over the years. Now goals are coming too, with Solanke boasting a tally of 12 so far this season. That is very impressive.
But while he might be good signing and is a player who Howe has worked with before, the money just is not there to bring him in this month. The club are very wary of financial fair play, which is making it very hard for Newcastle to sign anyone during the January transfer window.
Sutton also suggests that Arsenal should be in the mix for Solanke, but that might be a stretch. The Gunners are looking for someone to score the goals that will catapult them towards the title, which might be beyond Solanke’s talents right now.
Regardless, whether it is Newcastle or Arsenal, Bournemouth do not want to sell right now.
