Newcastle United may suddenly have to fend off interest from Chelsea to sign one of their major targets for 2024.
The Magpies already have a plan in place for the summer transfer window, and it will not be hindered by Dan Ashworth’s move to Manchester United. Toon officials already have a recruitment strategy ready, and it includes targeting three key positions.
One type of player that they want to sign is a versatile forward, and that could lead them to a player who was first linked with the Magpies just over a year ago.
When Newcastle signed Anthony Gordon, they also had their eyes on a talent from La Liga. Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams was viewed as an alternative, while he was named as a potential Newcastle target for 2024 by iNews last year.
He would be a dream signing for Toon fans, and would be viewed as a major improvement on the likes of Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy.
The 21-year-old, who has been praised for his ‘marvellous‘ speed, would be a marquee arrival, but it appears that he is also attracting interest from another Premier League club.

Chelsea are also interested in Nico Williams
According to the Telegraph, Chelsea have now got Nico Williams on their radar ahead of the summer transfer window.
The report states that Mauricio Pochettino’s side have been impressed with the Spain international’s progress, as they begin to lay out their plans for the 2024/25 season.
They could include Williams, who could be the subject of interest from multiple Premier League clubs despite recently signing a new contract with Bilbao. His new deal contains a release clause of around £43million.
That type of figure will appeal to Newcastle. It is obviously a massive amount of money, but it does represent value considering how talented Williams is and how much potential he possesses.
The Magpies clearly see him as a possible addition, as he has been linked by reputable sources on a couple of occasions over the past year.
But now Chelsea pose a threat to Newcastle’s interest, and we all know how dominant they can be in the transfer market. The amount of money they have spent under Todd Boehly is frightening, yet they have nothing to show for it.
That is why they want to keep investing, and it is why Williams is on their radar. In the coming months, we will find out if he is still on Newcastle’s as well.
