Newcastle United’s hopes of signing Lewis Hall from Chelsea are almost officially over.

The 18-year-old has been linked with a move to St James’ Park this summer, with Eddie Howe eyeing up Hall as the answer to his left-back conundrum.

However, Chelsea had no plans to sell Hall to Newcastle, and instead intend to loan him out for the season.

Now a deal is lined up for the teenager, and he is going to be playing against the Magpies rather than for them.

Crystal Palace set to sign Lewis Hall on loan

That is because Fabrizio Romano has reported that Chelsea have agreed to send Hall to Crystal Palace on loan for the 2023/24 Premier League season.

He wrote on Twitter: “Lewis Hall will become new Crystal Palace player this week. Positive talks took place on player side after the agreement reached with Chelsea last week. Loan move until June 2024.”

Newcastle never had a chance

While Hall would have been another smart addition to this Newcastle squad due to his potential, a deal was never going to happen.

Chelsea have proven to be difficult to deal with in recent times, with the Blues unwilling to strengthen a club who they now consider a rival. We have shown interest in the likes of Conor Gallagher, Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech over the past 12 months, but were unable to bring them to St James’ Park.

Hall was always going to be a similar story, and a move to Crystal Palace suits Chelsea much better. They will then be able to reassess their options next summer, when they will hope to welcome back a much improved player to Stamford Bridge.

For Newcastle, they will have to look elsewhere as they search for a left-back. It remains to be seen if that will be the club’s priority following the Tino Livramento deal. However, it feels more likely that the Magpies will now go in search of a centre-back.

The interest in Hall felt like Newcastle being opportunistic, but it is an opportunity that is passing them by.

Instead, the youngster will be playing against Howe’s side this season rather than for them, and will hope to impress officials back at Chelsea during his year at Crystal Palace.
