Callum Wilson proves Newcastle United fans wrong about Yoane Wissa

Newcastle United fans have some concerns when it comes to trying to sign Yoane Wissa from Brentford.

The striker has emerged as Newcastle United’s new top target in the wake of missing out on Hugo Ekitike to Liverpool.

It has been reported that Wissa is open to joining Newcastle United, who have already had a £25million bid rejected. A new offer is being prepared, with Geordie Boot Boys understanding that the Magpies are ready to pay £30million.

It would be a sizeable investment in a 28-year-old striker who will turn 29 in September, in an era in which Newcastle United are constantly striving to sign players under the age of 26 who have superstar potential.

Newcastle United signed Callum Wilson when he was 28 amid Yoane Wissa concerns

Signing Wissa would represent a shift from that policy, but fans should not have any concerns about spending a sizeable sum of money on the Brentford forward.

After all, it is a similar situation to the one Newcastle experienced when they bought Callum Wilson in 2020.

At the time, Wilson was 28-years-old. He was entering his prime, with Newcastle spending £20million to sign him from Bournemouth.

Even that was a move away from Newcastle’s transfer policy, with Steve Bruce having to convince the hierarchy that it would be a good use of funds.

It proved to be exactly that, with Wilson’s goals consistently keeping Newcastle United in the Premier League. He even helped lead the Magpies into the Champions League, scoring 18 times during the 2022/23 campaign.

During his Newcastle United career, Wilson scored 49 goals in 130 games. If Wissa can replicate that then it will be money well spent.

After leaving the club, Newcastle fans called Wilson a ‘legend’. Not bad for someone who cost £20million at the age of 28…

Who is the oldest player Newcastle United have signed under PIF?

If Wissa does join Newcastle United, he will not be the oldest player who has signed for the club since the change of ownership.

That honour belongs to John Ruddy, who arrived on a free transfer in the summer of 2024 at the age of 37.

In terms of players who actually cost a fee, Kieran Trippier is the oldest Newcastle United signing under PIF. He was Howe’s first signing at St James’ Park, costing £12million from Atletico Madrid.

When Trippier arrived in January 2021, he was 31-years-old. Fast forward to the summer of 2025 and he is still an important figure at 34.
