Newcastle United fans are saying goodbye to Callum Wilson following confirmation of his departure.
It had been reported that Callum Wilson was likely to leave Newcastle United despite holding talks over an extension, and that has proven to be the case.
Wilson’s Newcastle United career is over, with the striker spending five seasons with the Magpies.
At the age of 33, he becomes a free agent after scoring 49 goals in 130 Toon appearances. He has proven to be well worth the £20million he cost when Steve Bruce brought him to St James’ Park from Bournemouth in 2020.

Fans hail Callum Wilson as a Newcastle United ‘legend’
While his Toon career has been hindered by injuries, Wilson has pretty much always been a reliable goalscorer when fit. That only changed this season when Wilson ended the campaign with one goal in 22 appearances.
But Newcastle United fans are looking at the bigger picture as they reflect on Wilson’s career, with so many Toon supporters on X admitting that the England international really is a club legend.
This supporter wrote: “Now this is confirmed I hope Callum Wilson finally receives the respect that his time at the club has earned. He’s been class – even in the darker periods. Some players have picked up legendary cult status here for much less.”
“Saved us in our worst period, amazing servant to the club, absolute bagsman and extremely handsome. Legend,” added another Toon fan.
A third Newcastle United supporter commented: “Class player for us, feels like the right time to leave but will go down a legend. All the best CW9.”
This member of the Toon Army added: “Best number nine since Shearer. Saved us under Bruce and got us Champions League football. One of the best signings we’ve ever made.”
Another Newcastle fan wrote: “Club legend. Not a chance we’d be where we are today without him; single-handedly kept us in the division. Hope his last few seasons in football can be as injury-free as possible, no-one would deserve it more.”
Finally, this supporter simply posted: “Legend, thank you for everything you’ve done.”
Callum Wilson deserves legendary status at Newcastle United
Given how the final two seasons went, it is easy to forget how good Wilson was during his first few years on Tyneside.
He joined the club during a really difficult period, yet was twice able to score enough goals to keep Newcastle United in the Premier League, first under Bruce and then under Eddie Howe.
The 2022/23 season will be remembered as Wilson’s best. He fired in 18 Premier League goals as the Magpies qualified for the Champions League, while he also went to the World Cup with England and started the 2023 Carabao Cup final. Sadly, that ended with Manchester United beating Newcastle.
Fortunately, Wilson was involved in the 2025 Carabao Cup final. He was part of the team that ended Newcastle’s trophy drought, and it was special to see him donning that winner’s medal. He deserved that for everything he gave to the club during a time of doom and gloom.
Wilson stayed long enough to experience the sunshine, and he leaves Newcastle United in a lot better position than when he arrived. He truly is a modern day Toon legend.
