Newcastle United are set to confirm the signing of towering striker Nick Woltemade for a club record fee of £69m.

Having spent months being rejected by quality strikers, the Magpies have finally found someone willing to take the next step in their career on Tyneside.

Newcastle United have agreed a fee for Nick Woltemade, which is believed to be in the region of £69m, breaking the record set by the deal for Alexander Isak in 2022.

Woltemade has already completed his medical ahead of the move, and was spotted at St James’ Park on Friday afternoon ahead of the announcement.

Newcastle have got the striker they were hoping for this summer, and Bundesliga expert Ben Boyd has told Geordie Boot Boys why the deal for Woltemade is the right move for the Magpies.

Nick Woltemade compared to Harry Kane ahead of Newcastle United move

Archie Rhind-Tutt thinks Woltemade is better than Benjamin Sesko, so the Magpies could be on to a winner after missing out on the former RB Leipzig man to Manchester United.

Newcastle are looking to sign another striker this summer, but the feeling is that Woltemade will be a replacement for Isak, rather than Callum Wilson.

There is a lot of hype around Woltemade, but his high price tag also comes with an expectation to deliver. The German star will not show off his skills against Leeds, but Boyd, writer on The Germans Always Win, spoke to Geordie Boot Boys about what fans can expect from their new record signing.

“Nick Woltemade’s technique on the ball and surprisingly agile nature for a player of his size have earned him the nickname ‘Woltemessi’,” he said.

“English fans may look at his size and compare his attributes to those of Peter Crouch, but Woltemade is far more than the ‘lanky striker’ trope.

“Like Harry Kane, he likes to drop deeper and act as a playmaker as well as a striker. Hoeneß has also deployed him on the wing at times, and only recently decided to use his height as an out-and-out target man.

“He’s also been known to score in big games, such as the DFB-Pokal final and was the top scorer in the U21 Euros earlier this summer, where he seemed a cut above many of his opponents.”

What Newcastle United fans must be aware of with Nick Woltemade

With Alexander Isak staying away from Newcastle’s first team, it was clear that a top striker needed to be signed, and Woltemade was the one.

Woltemade will take the No.27 at Newcastle, a shirt worn by Steven Taylor for many years during his Newcastle career.

Now, Woltemade has the chance to become a Newcastle legend, but there are some aspects to his game which Howe will be keen on improving.

While Woltemade scored 12 Bundesliga goals last season, Boyd told Geordie Boot Boys that he needs to work on his finishing.

“If there was anything for fans to be concerned about, I would point out that he only has about six months of stellar form at the highest level. Though not his fault, it is a very high transfer fee for potential, but I do believe he will hit the ground running in the Premier League.

“Another point is one-on-ones with the goalkeeper. He’s scored his fair share of them, and 12 Bundesliga goals is a respectable haul. I still think he can improve in that department and become a more consistent, clinical forward in addition to his playmaking work.”
