Nick Woltemade is a striker who has become Newcastle United’s most expensive signing ever.

It was a long, hard transfer window for Newcastle United, with Eddie Howe seeing several of his top targets go elsewhere.

Alexander Isak’s desire to join Liverpool had been an extra strain the club had to deal with, but there may finally be some light at the end of the tunnel.

Newcastle spent money in the summer after recruiting Anthony Elanga, Jacob Ramsey and Malick Thiaw, but they were not done there.

Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade headed to St. James’ Park in a record transfer and here is everything you need to know about the new star on the Tyne.

Nick Woltemade to Newcastle United transfer

Newcastle United had looked for a striker all summer long without success, failing in attempts to sign Hugo Ekitike, Joao Pedro, Yoane Wissa, Jorgen Strand Larsen, Liam Delap and Matheus Cunha.

Just as it looked like there were no options left to consider, a brand new name came out of nowhere.

As Newcastle awaited their Champions League opponents to be drawn, it emerged that a transfer for Nick Woltemade had been agreed with Stuttgart.

The news came out of the blue as it emerged Newcastle would pay an initial £65m, with £4m in add-ons to the Bundesliga club.

That made Woltemade Newcastle’s most expensive player ever at £69m and he soon headed to Newcastle for a medical.

The signing was confirmed on August 30.

How old is Nick Woltemade?

Born in Bremen, Germany, on February 14, 2002, Woltemade is 23 years old as of August 2025.

Howe has been targeting players in that age range this summer, as they already have plenty of top-level experience but still have room to get even better.

How tall is Nick Woltemade?

Woltemade stands at a towering 6’6″ tall, which makes him the second-tallest player in the squad behind only Dan Burn.

Woltemade would easily be the tallest striker in the Premier League, though, and give Newcastle a great edge at set pieces.

What position does Nick Woltemade play?

Woltemade is as classic a central striker as you can possibly get, which is no surprise given his lanky frame.

The German has played the vast majority of his matches as the leading striker, but has played in a more creative role in the No.10 position on occasion.

Given the formation Howe uses, though, he will only be playing up top.

Nick Woltemade salary

According to Salary Sport, Woltemade earned just £20,000 a week at Stuttgart, which equals just over £1m a year.

Even though that seems low, if it’s true, Newcastle have no doubt offered him a massive pay rise but it’s not yet clear how much he earns at the club.

Nick Woltemade stats

Despite his potential, Woltemade’s career stats so far don’t make for the most impressive reading, given the price Newcastle are paying, even if he enjoyed a good season last term.

Praise for Nick Woltemade

Speaking in February, Stuttgart captain Atakan Karazor had high praise for Woltemade.

When it was put to him that Woltemade is nicknamed the ‘two-meter Messi’ by publication ran, he said: “Is that what he’s called these days? Awesome!

“To be honest, I’d say I can spot a good footballer pretty quickly. I noticed that with Nick right from the first week of training.

“He’s a player who’s two meters tall. He has technique like Messi… He’s just a great guy! It became clear to me pretty quickly that he could have a good season with us, and that’s what he’s doing right now.

“We have to protect a player like that. He feels comfortable in the team. The important thing for us as a team is to keep putting Nick in the spotlight – whether that’s in space or up front in the box.

“But Nick also manages to keep himself in the spotlight. We know what we have in him: We have a two-meter Messi-Musiala! We hope he shows that again on Friday.”
