Barcelona decide they are ready to sell 27-year-old star after interest from Newcastle

Barcelona have now decided that they are ready to sell one of their star players amid interest from Newcastle United.

The Spanish giants will effectively be forced to have a huge clear-out this summer as they look to solve their financial troubles and Newcastle could use that to their advantage in their pursuit of Andreas Christensen.

Newcastle have been interested in Christensen for many months now and a new report from Marca has suggested that the defender will be put up for sale this summer.

Newcastle can use Barcelona’s troubles to their advantage

While Newcastle have some financial issues of their own to worry about, it is not nearly as troubling as what Barcelona are going through as they will have to sell just to continue running as a club.

They are likely to keep their big name players like Robert Lewandowski and Ilkay Gundogan while they are also refusing to let go of their young talents in Gavi, Pedri and Yamine Lamal.

However, pretty much everyone else in the squad will be made available for sale in what will be a huge overhaul of the squad in the summer transfer window.

Newcastle have been big admirers of Christensen since his days at Chelsea where he won the Champions League, though it seemed that Barcelona were reluctant to let go of the centre-back until now.

Newcastle are in need of a new centre-back

As the summer window quickly approaches Newcastle will need to have a plan of action for what will likely be a much busier window that January, and a new defender should be near the top of the list.

Fabian Schar is a brilliant partner for Sven Botman and has probably been Newcastle’s best and most important defender this season, especially with his recent goalscoring run.

However, the Swiss international will be turning 33 this year and Newcastle will be wanting to think about the long-term, not to mention the fact Jamaal Lascelles is the only alternative option at that position aside from Emil Krafth.

Christensen would bring a wealth of experience and a winning mentality and though it’s unclear how much the La Liga champions would be demanding, they are sure to make it a fair price given their poor financial position.
