Newcastle want Barcelona’s Andreas Christensen this summer

Reports in Spain are suggesting that Newcastle United could be looking to raid Barcelona in the summer for their star defender Andreas Christensen.

The Danish centre-back is having a blockbuster season at the Barcelona and won’t want to leave the Catalan giants this summer, nor do the club want to sell, but SPORT have reported that Newcastle now pose a ‘great danger’ to Barca’s plans to keep him at the Camp Nou.

Newcastle are said to be keen on the 26-year-old who has won several trophies during his time at Chelsea including the Champions League and FA Cup. Antonio Conte hailed him as ‘wonderful‘ and touted him as a future captain.

In his first season in Spain the defender has missed several games through injury, but has now played the entirety of the last eight matches in the heart of the Barcelona defence.

With Barcelona’s financial woes they will have to sell some top assets this summer in order to balance the books which is why SPORT believes Newcastle may test their resolve for Christensen this summer. Whether Barca want to sell or not may be irrelevant if they can’t move on other players to bring their wage bill down.

Christensen’s Premier League experience as well as that in the Champions League makes him a perfect target. He’s still relatively young and can play either side of the central defence meaning he could partner Sven Botman or fill in that position if Botman was ever injured.

Christensen would be a great addition to Newcastle

I really like the idea of going for Christensen, I think he’d be a superb fit for Newcastle and he’s exactly what we need this summer. A young, hungry defender with bags of experience of playing at the highest level.

Barca are unlikely to make it easy for Newcastle to prise him away, but it will be worth sticking around at the negotiating table to ensure it happens. Our board have proven they’re willing to play the long game with the Sven Botman and James Maddison pursuits, so they won’t feel pressured by Barcelona.
