Newcastle United have been handed a bit of a stumbling block in their bid to sign a very talented midfielder in the summer.

Newcastle have been tracking Atalanta’s Ederson for a few months now in a bid to upgrade their midfield, but there are a number of clubs who are having that same idea.

A new report from Gazzetta della Sport names Arsenal as the latest cub to show an interest in the Brazilian alongside Newcastle, Man United, Liverpool and Tottenham.

Newcastle have a lot of competition for ‘brilliant’ midfielder

Ederson is enjoying a ‘brilliant‘ season with Atalanta where he has played 30 times this season, scoring six goals and assisting one playing as a box-to-box midfielder.

It’s believed that Newcastle had actually made contact with Ederson over a potential move as he looks destined to join the Premier League in the very near future and has made it clear he is ready to leave.

A fee of £35m was rumoured to be how much the Italian side would demand for the midfielder in January, though that may have changed given all of the interest and Newcastle may be looking at a more inflated fee.

Eddie Howe remains intent on improving his midfield options in the summer, especially with Joelinton possibly on the way out if he doesn’t get a new deal, and Ederson may be his preferred option.

Newcastle may need to sell to bring in

There will be far more money available to Newcastle in the summer than there was in January with all the Champions League revenue and commercial deals with Adidas coming into play.

However, that does not solve the issue of Howe having too many midfielders who will all be wanting to start games.

The likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton will all want starting places but you also have to consider what Joe Willock brings to the team and the performances of Sean Longstaff and Lewis Miley who will also want regular minutes.

Adding in another star player to the mix sounds like a disaster waiting to happen, so it may be that Newcastle have to move one on before bringing someone like Ederson in.
