Newcastle United’s plans for the summer transfer window suffered an early blow after big news broke about Liam Delap.
Delap went into the summer’s transfer window in high demand after a fine season for Ipswich on an individual basis, during which he scored 12 Premier League goals.
Indeed, Newcastle United took note as a result.
Newcastle held talks to sign Delap but a host of other clubs such as Everton, Manchester United and Chelsea were also credited with an interest.
Now, the budding transfer saga appears to be coming to a close. Delap is set to join Chelsea, meaning Newcastle will go without one of their summer transfer targets.
It’s fair to say Newcastle fans on social media are not happy.

Newcastle United fans tell Liam Delap he’s made a huge mistake
Lots of supporters on social media believe Delap has made a mistake in choosing to join Chelsea.
The Blues have signed a lot of strikers over the years and only a select few have really worked out. Romelu Lukaku, Fernando Torres, Radamel Falcao and Gonzalo Higuain are among the high-profile examples of that.
“Be at West Ham in 2 years,” joked another fan.
One supporter added: “He’ll end up like Tosin, who also chose Chelsea over us. Now he rots on the bench. Same will happen with Delap.”
“Loaned to Strasbourg in 2 years,” added one fan.
Why Liam Delap rejected Newcastle United for Chelsea
Reports have claimed that Delap rejected Newcastle because he wanted first-team football.
Newcastle had wanted to play Delap and Alexander Isak together but it seems the presence of the Swede reportedly put him off a move to St James’ Park.
Sadly, that might be a problem Newcastle encounter this summer. When fully fit, Isak is simply too good to drop and a striker who would feasibly start elsewhere may be put off a move to Newcastle as a result.
Joining Chelsea is a risk given their transfer record with strikers. However, it might be slightly more calculated a gamble than moving to Newcastle and risking not starting too often.
