Newcastle United are set to miss out on signing Liam Delap from Ipswich Town.

The Magpies have tried their best to bring Liam Delap to St James’ Park, but the 22-year-old is on course to reject Eddie Howe’s advances.

Newcastle have spoken to Delap about moving to Tyneside, with the striker talking to multiple suitors about his future.

There has been quite the queue for his signature, with various clubs appreciating the value he represents at £30million.

But it is Enzo Maresca who is set to win the race, with Chelsea the favourites to sign Delap from Ipswich Town.

Liam Delap to opt against Newcastle United transfer

It is a blow for Newcastle United, and now details have emerged as to why the former Manchester City forward is not going to end up in the North East.

According to the Northern Echo, Delap is going to choose a move to Chelsea over Newcastle United.

They add that Alexander Isak’s presence on Tyneside has influenced Delap, as the 25-year-old is always going to be Eddie Howe’s first choice striker.

In contrast, Delap is more likely to be a starter for Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea side.

That is despite Newcastle thinking Delap and Isak can play together.

Newcastle United to suffer Liam Delap repeat

The Magpies had the opportunity to sign Delap 12 months ago. He was available from Manchester City, with Ipswich paying £20million for his services.

That proved to be an inspired decision, with Delap netting 12 Premier League goals. Unfortunately, it was not enough to save Ipswich from relegation to the Championship.

But it has been enough to earn Kieran McKenna’s side a £10million profit, with Delap seizing his opportunity in the top flight.

Unfortunately, it is an opportunity that Newcastle United could not really give him.

Even last summer, Delap wanted regular first-team football. While the Magpies had been tracking him, that is not something they could offer.

Ipswich could, while Newcastle went on to sign Will Osula from Sheffield United for an initial £10million.

One year later, the Magpies are missing out on Delap for the same reason.
