Sean Longstaff has officially left Newcastle United to join Premier League rivals Leeds and Alan Shearer has reacted.
Longstaff is a product of the Newcastle United academy and made 214 appearances for his boyhood club.
The 27-year-old, however, lost his starting place last season following Sandro Tonali’s return from a ten-month ban from football.
Now, Leeds are paying up to £15million for Longstaff, who has signed a four-year contract at Elland Road.
The money Newcastle have received for the midfielder will be helpful, too. Having progressed through their academy, every penny Leeds are paying for him will go down as ‘pure profit’ on Newcastle’s balance sheet.
Still, it’s an emotional goodbye. Longstaff won the Carabao Cup with the Magpies earlier this year, and scored in huge games against the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Southampton during his senior career on Tyneside.

Alan Shearer wishes Sean Longstaff luck at Leeds United
Upon the confirmation of the news, Longstaff took to social media platform Instagram to post an emotional message.
It was a short but sweet statement. Longstaff was speaking over clips of himself in action for Newcastle and captioned the post: “Thank you for everything @nufc.”
Newcastle legend Shearer responded with: “Good luck Sean.”
Newcastle United plan to replace Sean Longstaff
Longstaff leaves Newcastle with a great deal of respect. Previously a key player under Eddie Howe, there’s no shame in losing a place to a player as good as Tonali.
In an ideal world, the club would have kept him as a squad option ahead of next season. Still, Longstaff wanted Newcastle to get a transfer fee for him, rather than him leaving for free next summer.
Newcastle do plan to replace Longstaff, with Coventry City’s Jack Rudoni touted as a potential target.
Even if a new player is signed, however, much will be expected of Lewis Miley.
Newcastle rate Miley highly and will hope to see much more from the teenager next season, after injuries stunted his progress last time out.
