One of Newcastle United’s summer targets and star midfielder now looks like he could be staying at his current club as they prepare to offer him a new deal.

Newcastle had hoped that they’d be able to capitalise on Conor Gallagher being put on the market by Chelsea, but now both parties are interested in signing a new contract.

A new report from The Telegraph has claimed that Chelsea’s stance is that they will offer new terms at some point later on in the year, and Gallagher is known to be keen to stay in West London.

Newcastle still on the hunt for a new midfielder

Although they’ve got several midfielders expected back in the summer as Joelinton and Sandro Tonali will come back into the fold, Newcastle are still on the hunt for a new man.

Gallagher has been on their radar for months now with the England international previously put up for sale by Chelsea, though things may now be taking a turn.

This season, Gallagher has arguably been one of Chelsea’s most important players despite the fact he’s got over £200m worth of midfielders either side of him in Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandes.

That’s exactly why the Blues could now be trying to keep hold of him for the long term with the 23-year-old not short of potential suitors as both Newcastle and Tottenham have been keeping a close eye on his situation.

Newcastle delivered another transfer blow

Newcastle have big plans for this summer as they look to recapture last year’s incredible form which saw them qualify for the Champions League for the first time in two decades.

One thing that people often forget is that, while they’ll have more money to spend than they did on January, getting Tonali back after 10 months out will pretty much be like a new signing.

If they can bring in two or three really top players into the squad, perhaps at right-wing or left-back where Howe is keen to improve, they could make a big push next season.

While Europe is certainly the target for next year, the obvious benefit of missing out would mean they’d only have to focus on one game per week once again which proved so key during the previous Premier League campaign.
