Newcastle United’s transfer hopes have taken another blow as a start midfielder and summer target has claimed he wants to stay at his current club.

Newcastle have held a longstanding interest in Chelsea’ Conor Gallagher as it looked like he would be leaving his boyhood club who had previously placed him on the market.

However, a new report from HITC is claiming that the midfielder is now hoping to sign a new deal with the Blues despite interest from Newcastle and two other Premier League clubs.

Star midfielder hoping for new deal despite Newcastle’s interest

Although they have over £200m’s worth of midfielders in the team with Enzo Fernandes and Moises Caicedo, it has been Gallagher, their academy product who cost them nothing, who has been their star player.

Gallagher’s energy has been integral to winning Chelsea points in what would have otherwise been an absolute disaster of a season, and other clubs have been taking note.

Newcastle, alongside Tottenham and West Ham, really appreciate the 24-year-old’s talents and are hoping that he’d still be on the market this summer, but the player himself as other ideas.

Gallagher wants to stay at his boyhood club and fight for them as they hope to get back on track fighting for Champions League football and titles next year, but the club are yet to offer him a new deal with his current one expiring in 2025.

Newcastle’s summer plans are well underway

Despite losing their sporting director as Dan Ashworth looks set to join Man United at some point in the near future, Newcastle have already started working on the summer window which will be a huge period for the club.

Although they have suffered a midfield crisis this season, bringing in a new midfielder may not be top of the list for Newcastle unless they are planning to move someone on first.

In the summer, they will be expecting both Sandro Tonali and Joelinton back into the team with Joe Willock making his return last night, meaning there are six available midfielders who will all be after key minutes.

They are after a more defensive minded midfielder, of course, but whether or not they can fit one in without upsetting the balance of the team remains to be seen.
