Newcastle United’s most ambitious transfer target has now made a decision about his future.

The Magpies are yet to make a major splash in this summer’s transfer window, but there is hope that Newcastle are close to a breakthrough.

While it could be a player completely out of the blue, the most likely candidate to arrive at St James’ Park is Malick Thiaw. He is being heavily linked with a move to Tyneside, with Eddie Howe recently hailing Thiaw.

The 22-year-old could prove to be the right-sided centre-back that Newcastle United are craving, but that is just one of the club’s priorities this summer.

Their other is in attack, with Eddie Howe eager to bring in a right winger that can take his forward line to the next level.

Newcastle United have been linked with Nico Williams

And one player who would definitely do that is Nico Williams.

He is available for £47million due to a release clause in his Athletic Bilbao contract, which is not a huge amount on the back of him shining at Euro 2024 with Spain. The 22-year-old was one of the players of the tournament, scoring in the final as Spain beat England.

Williams showed exactly why he would be a dream signing for Newcastle with his performances in Germany, but he has only been interested in a move to Barcelona.

It was recently reported that Newcastle know they cannot afford Williams’ wage demands, while Joan Laporta exclaimed that Barca would be able to splash out for the winger.

Nico Williams expected to stay at Athletic Bilbao

However, there has now been a change of plan.

According to the Athletic, Williams is now expected to stay at Athletic Bilbao for the upcoming season.

They report that Barcelona are now looking at alternative targets, with their chances of signing Williams now decreasing. The Athletic add that he could even sign a new contract with the La Liga side, with Athletic willing to propose a better deal for their player.

Williams’ decision could help Newcastle

For a while now, there has been no chance of Newcastle signing Williams. With his wage demands and the Magpies’ lack of European football, a deal seemed to be beyond Toon officials.

But at least now it looks like no one will be able to do a deal, and that could be good news for Newcastle United.

Williams’ future will likely be up in the air again next summer, and by then a move to Tyneside might be a bit more appealing. Newcastle will be hoping that they can qualify for the Champions League again, and that might be what it will take to convince Williams that St James’ Park is the place for him.

Of course, Newcastle might not actually have any need for a player like Williams this time next year. That will depend on who Paul Mitchell brings in this summer, with the sporting director continuing his search for a right winger.

Nico Gonzalez has been linked with Newcastle, while Noni Madueke of Chelsea is also a target.
